Today, the BBC Bitesize English lesson will continue to teach you the skills of writing a story, with some guidance on creating ‘Settings in stories’ and writing an adventure story. A good story needs a descriptive setting, to enable the reader to learn about the place where the story is happening. The first video gives you lots of advice on how to create a setting, emphasising the need to use the senses to describe it, bringing it to life for the reader. The second video gives you advice on writing an adventure story, which must include something exciting and extraordinary, often including a quest or mission, with the need to escape from danger. The final video features two Blue Peter presenters making some story dice, before using them to write a short story. You can use their templates to make some story dice, or you can use a piece of paper and make your own, using the three lists of characters, places and items. If you decide to make the dice, you could add two really strong adjectives to describe a place, for example, a huge beautiful castle. Finally, think about some favourite adventure stories, which could be a book, video game, film or musical. Then record your ideas on a table, describing what happens in the story to make it an adventure story.
Your third lesson today is Science and you will be learning about the impact that forces and gravity have on the game of cricket. There are two videos about cricket, the speed of bowling and how forces impact on the game. Initially, Seymour Science learns how the following forces work: push, pull, twist and bend. Afterwards, you will learn how fast bowlers can affect the game of cricket, because players have very little time to react to a fast ball. By practising with a bowling machine, cricketers can improve their batting skills. Use the interactive activity to see how, where and when a ball bounces, can change how quickly it reaches the player who is batting. Your final task is to match some images to the type of force they are showing.
