This week we welcomed a new friend to Cygnet Class. He comes from Ukraine so we have started to learn some Ukrainian words as part of our routine. We have been learning about doubling in maths. We drew butterflies, painted dots on one side and folded them over to make a doubles print. We started spotting doubles around our environment and even on a pair of sandals. We played dominoes by starting with the double 6 and placing the doubles at right angles to the other dominoes.

In our phonics we have been learning about alternative pronunciation of i, o, c and g in words eg the i in sit and kind are pronounced differently. We learned about spelling tricky words little, one, do, when, what, out and writing them in sentences.

We started our learning about minibeasts by reading The Boy Who Lost His Bumble by Trudi Esberger. The children thought of lots of questions they would like to be answered as we investigate bumble bees. We went on a bumble bee hunt to see where we could find bumble bees in the school environment. We drew maps of the best places to find bumble bees. We used our creative skills to make our own bumble bees with lots of different materials. We enjoyed listening to the story Bumble Bear by Nadia Shireen where a bear dresses up as a bumble bee so that he can go to bear school and get honey. We discussed a new word “diabolical” and what it means when the bear gave out a diabolical roar. The Minibeast theme continued into PE where we warmed up by playing a fun game of butterflies and spiders and then we thought of dung beetles as we practised controlling a small ball and aiming to hit a target.
