This week we read Jack and the Beanstalk. We discussed that this is a traditional tale which has been retold by the author so there will be different versions. There was a lot of discussion about the costume that Jack was illustrated wearing. The children thought he was wearing a dress and tights therefore he must be a girl. We looked at medieval clothes and also the photos of John the shepherd and Katy at Gressenhall and discussed that clothes have changed throughout the ages. The children were intrigued that the giant was called an ogre in this version. In Phonics we have been learning new sounds; oe, au, ey, and the split digraph i – e and blending these sounds for reading new words. We practised our listening skills when we went for a walk around the field to listen to the birdsong. One of the children brought an interactive book The Little Book of Garden Bird Songs to share. We had fun playing the sounds and listening for them. While observing the birds we realised to our delight that there was a pigeon nesting in one of the trees. We were able to see it through the newly sprouted green leaves.
We planted mini pumpkin seeds which we had saved from a pumpkin we had at Halloween. This prompted lots of discussion about the children’ memories of celebrating Halloween. We looked in our carpet book and recalled making pumpkin soup and reading Pumpkin Soup by Helen Cooper. We are learning about how to plant seeds and look after them.
In our SCARF lesson we have been thinking about how we can help our friends. We role played different scenarios about how we can help our friends such as when they are sad, hurt, alone or not wanting to share. We thought about possible solutions. We talked about how it makes us feel when we are helpful.
We have been listening and responding to The Big Bear Funk in our Charanga lessons. We enjoyed learning a new action song called Things for Fingers.
In Maths we have been learning about rotating 2D and 3D shapes, matching shapes and copying shapes and models. We have been using language such as rotate, bottom, middle, top, on top, right and left to describe where the shapes are placed.
In PE we learned 2 new rolls; the barrel roll and the straight roll. We learned that we needed to hold each shape right through the roll and to keep our bodies strong as we moved. It was tricky at first but we all worked hard and improved during the lesson.
