We have been busy making props for our Nativity this week. We made a background starry night and mixed different colours to make shades of brown to paint the stable and Inn. The children really enjoyed their bus journey to the church to perform the Nativity. They all performed really well and were not put off when we had to sing the last song without the music. They all sung up with gusto and the acoustics at the church carried their voices. They enjoyed watching Swan Class perform their retelling of the Nativity story. Cygnet and Swan classes were given a beautiful wooden Nativity set to share from the church when Mrs Harvey came to do a special assembly about the Posada. We have been learning about shape in our maths lessons. We have learned that rectangles have 4 sides and 4 corners, 2 short sides and 2 long sides. The square is a “special rectangle” because its sides are equal. We used triangles to make stars for our starry night background for the Nativity. The children did well using their fine motor skills to hold the triangles while they drew round them and to place the second triangle correctly to make the star. They enjoyed using glitter to make their star shine. We investigated the baubles and decorations in our Christmas box to make groups, to do sorting and counting. We did pattern work when we made paper chains to decorate the classroom. In our phonics we learned new sounds, to spell the tricky words no and go and we learned about using syllables to help us write longer words. We read “The Christmas Pine” by Julia Donaldson and went for a walk in the frost to observe the evergreen and deciduous trees we have in the school grounds. We learned that the pine tree grows cones and used cones to make our Christmas elf decorations at home. During independent learning time children used their cutting, sticking, drawing and writing skills to make lots of Christmas cards for friends and messages on our message string. The highlight of our Christmas celebrations was the visit from Santa. They had fun playing party games at the Christmas party. We enjoyed doing a reindeer hunt which involved finding hidden flags on the school field. The children enjoyed their first Christmas lunch at school. One of the children commented that it was the best Christmas lunch he had ever tasted. We watched a virtual pantomime of Jack and the Beanstalk. We used our movement skills we practised in PE to go on an outdoor hunt for the candy cane forest and we found it!
