Kestrel News 18.11.20

Kestrel class have worked super hard with their home learning this week! They have been learning lots of new things: working on parenthesis and embedded clauses in their SPaG lessons; learning about Maya food in History lessons; creating inventories and information posters in English; making word searches of Maya vocabulary in Computing; reading timetables in Maths; and learning the months of the year in French. My goodness! What a busy few days!

Here are some of our Maya vocabulary word searches.

How fantastic are these Maya Food Inventories?

Back to learning at school for everybody tomorrow!

Have a good couple of days with Mrs Whittle and I will see you on Monday.

Hello Kestrels,

Topic Resources

Lesson 1 – What happened to the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings?

After watching the presentation, I would like you to complete the following tasks.

Lesson 2 – What happened to the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings?

Watch the BBC Bitesize clip.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zxsbcdm/articles/z8q487h

Use the information from Bitesize to complete the following task.

Take a piece of A4 paper and position landscape. Divide the paper into 6 equal boxes, three at the top of the page and three below. Repeat with another piece of paper. Copy the pictures and dates from the information about King Edward into the boxes at the top of each page. Use the boxes below each picture to record what you know about that stage of Edward’s life. You can use bullet points or sentences. Colour the pictures neatly.

Lesson 3 – Acrostic about Anglo-Saxons and Vikings

Think about all you have learnt about the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings this half-term:

Why did they come? Where did they come from? Art and Culture, Beliefs, Weapons and Battles, Laws and Trade, How did they live?, Famous Kings and finally What happened to them?

Use this information to write an acrostic with ANGLO-SAXONS AND VIKINGS down the side of the page. Try to tell the story of what happened . So, start with when and why they came, then perhaps write about how they lived in Britain (food, homes, settlements, clothes etc). You could include information about their beliefs and famous Kings. Your acrostic needs to finish by explaining what happened to them.

Try to use correct historical vocabulary such as pagan, longhouse, longship and Danegeld. You will probably include names of Gods, Kings and settlements/kingdoms. This is an opportunity for you to show off your learning so include as much information as you can. Make the first letter of each line stand out, perhaps by using bubble writing or a bold coloured font if you decide to do your acrostic on the computer. You might like to decorate your work with pictures to illustrate your writing.

Additional Resources

Mrs Moore very kindly sent me a couple of songs about the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings that she thought you might enjoy. Have a listen and sing along!

Have fun! See you Tuesday x

Lesson 3 – Anglo-Saxon Kings

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zxsbcdm/articles/z9tdq6f

Make a fact file for each of the six kings. Include information from all three lessons this week. Draw a picture of each king on your fact file.

Make a timeline to show when each Anglo-Saxon king reigned. Use a piece of A4 plain paper (or something similar). Position the paper landscape and draw a horizontal line across the middle. This needs to be 20 cm long. Mark 1 cm intervals along the line. Your timeline needs to start with AD 870 and be ordered in ten year intervals to finish with AD 1070. so 870, 880, 890, 900, 910 etc up to 1070. Draw different coloured horizontal lines under the main timeline to show the dates each king reigned. You can get this information from the bitesize clip. Decorate your timeline with pictures.

Hello Kestrels,

Here is your work for this week. All the resources you need are below. Work hard!

English Resources

Maths Resources

You may not be able to do all the activities as some require a protractor, which you may not have at home. If this is the case, either look back at previous blogs to see if there are Maths activities you have not yet completed, or alternatively, you could do a daily arithmetic test. I will put three up for this week.

Topic Resources

Use the information from the powerpoint to complete the following activities:

Lesson 2 – Viking Gods

Watch the powerpoint and then complete the tasks.

This week, I would like you to do some research about what life was like in Viking Britain. The following resources will give you lots of information:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/ztyr9j6/articles/ztqbr82

I would like you to research one aspect of Viking life each day. Choose from the following: Viking Homes, Viking Clothes, Viking Jewellery, Viking Jobs and Society, Food and Drink or Viking Laws. Use the information from the resources I have uploaded but also try to do research from other sources such as books and other websites.

You may choose how to present your research; this could be a poster, booklet, powerpoint, model or even a quiz. However, I would like you to choose a different way to present your learning for each aspect of Viking life you find out about. Aim to do a minimum of three aspects of Viking life please. Have fun!
