This week in our maths we have been learning about taking away with first, then and now stories . We played some fun games and listened to the story Kipper’s Toy Box and then we used toys to make up our own stories about taking away. We played a fun strategy game where we had to decide whether we should take away 1,2 or 3 pebbles so that we did not take away the last pebble and lose.

We have continued our learning about the Jack and the Beanstalk story by thinking about the characters and using descriptive words in our sentences. We used our creative skills in dance to express the feelings of the characters in the story. We made up our own story by changing elements of Jack and the Beanstalk and called it Rosetta and the Bank. We read Jim and the Beanstalk by Raymond Briggs and the children listened really well and noticed that the illustrations made a pattern of black and white and then coloured throughout the book. We revised all of the phonemes we have learned.

We have been learning about the things we can do to look after our world. We listened to Dinosaurs and All That Rubbish by Michael Foreman. We watched some videos and learned about the importance of reducing our use of and recycling plastics so that we can look after the seas. We listened to the book 10 Things I Can Do to Help My World by Melanie Walsh. There were lots of good discussions while we worked in pairs to make our own posters of what we can do.

We planted cress seeds we decided to watch and see which ones would grow first, some were planted on compost and some on paper. We continue to look after our seedlings and to water our potatoes and planters. The sunflower seeds have started to germinate already. We talked about how we feel when we see the tiny shoots emerging from the soil. The children feel happy and excited to see the new shoots and to observe how the seedlings are changing.

Oh Thursday we did our first assembly infant of our parents and the whole of the school. We were all really brave to stand up and speak in front of a sea of faces. We have all grown up over the year and showed confidence and a can do attitude. On Friday this continued as we all took part in Platinum Time where we chose the activities we wanted to try in classes throughout the school. Cygnets enjoyed the activities and the disco was the favourite by far. We carefully coloured flags to make bunting for the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations. We enjoyed having our street party lunch together outside with the whole of the school. In the afternoon we designed and made crowns.
