This month’s values are High Aspirations and Be the Best You Can. We talked about what the children would like to be. Their ideas included vets, police officers, nurses, doctors, firefighters, and a goalkeeper. We also talked about superheroes and how some attributes such as championing good over bad is aspirational.
On day 9 of planting our sunflower seeds one of the children was very excited to announce that they had spotted a little shoot in one of the indoor sunflower plants. He rushed outside and was delighted to discover that some of the sunflower seeds had also germinated in the mini green house. We continued to experiment with our planting by planting butterbeans in jars with cottonwool, cress on tissue and peas on a thin layer of compost.
We climbed the beanstalk in dance with Caroline. We used our phonic knowledge to write about Jack. We observed some leaves growing in our environment and mixed colours to paint leaves to make a beanstalk. We listened to the next part of the story and learned a new word “Ogre.” We discussed whether Jack made good or bad choices climbing the beanstalk and knocking on the giant’s door.
There has been lots of self initiated pattern work. We finished our week with a maths trail outside. We found numerals and shapes in our environment, looked for things taller and shorter than ourselves, made tens frames and filled them with natural materials and made first, then, now stories.
